Speculative Fiction

People ask us all the time what we’re reading outside of ASOIAF and the answer is – A LOT! We love speculative fiction, and we love to talk about it, and we want to talk about it with you!

We will be choosing books simply based on what we’ve enjoyed reading, whether it’s an old release or a new one.

Our first stream will be Sunday January 17 at 3PM ET. The book is Who Fears Death by Nnedi Okorafor.

Believe it or not, we read books that aren’t set in Westeros or Essos!

Now that our beloved Game of Thrones is over, it’s time to shift gears. We’re taking a little break from the world of ice and fire and starting a speculative fiction book club!

Our first book is Who Fears Death by Nnedi Okorafor. From Goodreads:

“In a far future, post-nuclear-holocaust Africa, genocide plagues one region. The aggressors, the Nuru, have decided to follow the Great Book and exterminate the Okeke. But when the only surviving member of a slain Okeke village is brutally raped, she manages to escape, wandering farther into the desert. She gives birth to a baby girl with hair and skin the color of sand and instinctively knows that her daughter is different. She names her daughter Onyesonwu, which means “Who Fears Death?” in an ancient African tongue.

Reared under the tutelage of a mysterious and traditional shaman, Onyesonwu discovers her magical destiny – to end the genocide of her people. The journey to fulfill her destiny will force her to grapple with nature, tradition, history, true love, the spiritual mysteries of her culture – and eventually death itself.”
